Following the lead of England, the California legislature has reportedly decided that the correct way to refer to a single person, even a specific person whose sexual identity is known, is with a plural pronoun, they or them or their. Of course, it hasn’t completely abolished number, because it uses plural verbs for these single persons. According to, several other States and the District of Columbia have done similarly. None of these laws is a ban, nor (I assume) does any mandate the usage for private persons or casual conversation; but our colloquial language will most likely change under this kind of political pressure, as it has done in the past. People who don’t obey will be presumed to be bigots. I imagine I’ll obey, just like everybody else. Baa. Baa.
