A recent NY Times offers us a guest-editorial containing the following:

A trend that began in the early 2010s and continues to this day is not an “uptick”. As I’ve pointed out before, an uptick is a tiny, usually momentary, and usually negligible, increase. Prof. Vladeck is describing a large and troubling increase, rise, surge, or escalation (or pick your own synonym), not an uptick.
